Chancy A. Hartzler (1876-1947), bishop in the Illinois Mennonite Conference (Mennonite Church), son of Bishop John J. Hartzler, was born in St. Joseph County, Michigan on 5 May 1876, grew up in Cass County, Missouri, married Mary Neuenschwander 23 December 1900, and had one son, John. Ordained preacher at the Sycamore Grove Church (Mennonite Church) in Cass County, 22 October 1906, he served 1908-12 as a worker and then superintendent of the Kansas City (Kansas) Mission, then 1913 (1914 ordained bishop)-1947 as pastor of the Willow Springs Mennonite Church in Tiskilwa, Illinois. He was active in Illinois Conference work, serving as moderator and secretary, as well as in the Gen­eral Mission Board (Elkhart) and in the Men­nonite Board of Education. Hartzler died 15 October 1947.
