Jan van Ackeren (d. 1569)

Jan van Ackeren (Akeren, Akkeren), an Anabaptist martyr, born at Kortrijk (Courtrai) in Flanders, a serge weaver, was executed on 2 April 1569 (not 1573, as van Braght states), at Antwerp, Belgium, together with Jan de Timmerman and Balthasar de Rosieres. Jan van Ackeren, who was 63 years of age, declared during his trial that he had been (re) baptized "six or seven years ago" by Pauwels van Tielt in a wooded spot near Halewijn, Flanders, in the presence of about 50 persons shortly after midnight. Jan, whose wife and two daughters were still living at Kortrijk, had moved to Antwerp only two weeks before he was arrested. He was tortured on 9 March, and refusing to recant was sentenced to death, which he underwent with cheerfulness. The letters which he wrote in prison have been lost.
