Krebs (Kreps) family

The Krebs (Kreps) were a Swiss Mennonite family. They originally came from Reutigen in the Bernese Oberland. A number of them moved to the Netherlands because of the harsh measures of the Bern government against the Mennonites. Some of them settled near Kampen, others near Groningen. In the Netherlands, as in Switzerland, they were engaged in farming. Peter Krebes (Pieter Kreps) (d. 1741) was a deacon of the Oude Zwitsers near Groningen. Hans Krebs, a deacon of the Swiss Mennonite congregation of Kampen, promoted the merging (1822) with the local Mennonite congregation in this town.
