Visserweert (Limburg, Netherlands)Visserweert (Visschersweert), a hamlet on the Maas River (coordinates: 51° 4' 3" N, 5° 48' 3" E) in the municipality of Echt-Susteren in the Dutch province of Limburg, in the 16th century belonging to the territory of Valkenburg, was, like the neighboring hamlet of Illikhoven, a center of Mennonite activity ca. 1545-1547. On a pasture near Visschersweert Menno Simons preached in 1545, and from Visschersweert he went by boat to Roermond. Theunis van Hastenrath also preached and baptized here. Among the Mennonites of Visschersweert were Jan Neulen, Eeren Neuten, and the martyrs Metken and her husband Jacob Vrancken. BibliographyBax, W. Het Protestantisme in het Bisdom Luik I.
