Winkel, a small village in the Dutch province of North Holland, about four miles from Barsingerhorn (coordinates: 52° 45′ 0″ N, 4° 54′ 0″ E), was in 1533-34 a center of Anabaptist activity, nearly the whole population being Anabap­tist. Anabaptism was not rooted out here in the campaign of Reinier Brunt in early 1534; in 1540-41 mention is made of Anabaptism in Winkel, and still in 1558 Mennonite meetings were held here. After this Mennonites are not mentioned. L. Nannings Smit, Waechlink Dirks, Maerten Cornelisz, and Adriaen Pietersz, all of Winkel, died as martyrs, Smit in 1540, the other three in 1558.
