Grassland Hutterite Colony was founded in 1990 (Hofer says 1992) as a division from the Long Lake Hutterite Colony.

A daughter colony of the Grassland Hutterite Colony is the Boulder Hutterite Colony (Hosmer, South Dakota, USA).

In 2017 the Grassland Hutterite Colony was a Schmiedeleut Group 2 colony.
