Johannes "Hans" Andres: agriculturalist and farmer; born 6 September 1912 in Schroop near Danzig, Germany the eldest of three children of Jakob Andres (1885-1955) and Anna (Bartel) Andres (1890-1969). Hans married Eleonore "Lore" Bartels (born 16 December 1918 in Heiligenbeil) in Germany on 29 September 1942. They had four children: Hermann, Peter, Gerd and Anne. Hans died 5 February 2005 in Chilliwack, British Columbia and was buried in Agassiz. Lore died 20 April 2007, and was also buried in Agassiz.

Hans was baptized and attended the Mennonitengemeinde Heubuden-Marienburg. Hans trained as an Agriculturalist and was a manager of an experimental farm. During the early 1940s it was recommended by an influential civic leader that Hans voluntarily join the army. This would allow him to choose the type of service he could perform, which was to work with horses in the cavalry. Finding out that he could work with horses made this difficult decision easier to bare. Accordingly, he enlisted in the German army in 1943. He was given his certificate of discharge on 5 February 1946. Following World War II he had various professional agricultural jobs in West Germany.

Lore Bartels was confirmed in the Lutheran church in Germany. She was trained and worked as a hospital dietician before World War II. The Andres family immigrated to Canada in December 1951 with the Mennonite Central Committee chartered ship called the Beaverbrae. They were sponsored by a family from the Yarrow Mennonite Brethren Church in Yarrow, British Columbia.

After several months of working on a number of dairy farms, Hans Andres and family moved to Agassiz from Yarrow on 22 April 1952. Together with Siegfried and Walter Bartel, the three cousins purchased what was known at that time as The Hopyard, a one hundred seventy-five acre farm which had ceased growing hops (an early industry in Agassiz) after the destruction from the 1948 Fraser River Flood.

On 1 January 1956 Hans started operating his own dairy farm on Mountain View Road. In September 1956, Hans was crowned Corn King, the first recent European immigrant to have that honor in Agassiz. Mountain View Farm received many distinguished awards for high milk production. Because of health reasons, the dairy operation was discontinued in April 1964. In 1964, Hans established and continued a cherry and raspberry farm on Lougheed Highway until 1976, before retiring in 1991.

Hans was active in community affairs with the local Agricultural Association, the citizens’ advisory group from Kent/Mountain Institutions and at Dogwood Manor in Agassiz. From 1964 to 1980 Lore worked at Glenwood Care Centre for three years and then later as a library assistant at Agassiz Secondary School for thirteen years. She was active in the local school Parent Teachers Association, Agassiz Arts Council and the local Historical Society.

The family worshiped at Eden Mennonite Church in Chilliwack and from the early 1970s until their deaths, Hans and Lore were active members of the Harrison Gospel Chapel. Lore enjoyed volunteering as church librarian and the Food and Fellowship Committee. After farm retirement Hans assisted others in farm real estate and pension consulting, worked on the Andres family genealogy and enjoyed reading about world history and politics.
