Attema is a Dutch Mennonite family, originally from Leeuwarden, Friesland. E. Attema (d. 1888), a lawyer at Leeuwarden, was a trustee of the Algemene Doopsgezinde Sociëteit and a curator of its seminary. Jurjen Attema, of Leeuwarden, was preacher of the Nijmegen congregation 1861-1881 and also a trustee of the Algemene Doopsgezinde Sociëteit, Doede Attema (Leeuwarden, 2 October 1880- Hilversum, 18 November 1954) was pastor of Zijldijk 1907-1909, Twisk-Abbekerk 1909-1912, IJmuiden 1912-1915, and Zaandam-West 1915-1946. After retiring he still served as assistant pastor at Oudebildtzijl 1947-1949. Doede Attema, who was also for many years a trustee of the Algemene Doopsgezinde Sociëteit, was one of the first pastors to promote the Mennonite Youth Movement. For many years he was an advisory member of the board of the Doopsgezinde Jongerenbond. He was also secretary of the Zaanse Fonds.
