Bilder aus der Kirchengeschichte für Mennonitische Gemeindeschulen
Bilder aus der Kirchengeschichte für Mennonitische Gemeindeschulen (Bethel College, 1899) was the first in a series of books written by C. H. Wedel, then president of Bethel College, on the subject of church and Mennonite history for use in parochial schools. This little volume of 86 pages had, judging by the number of editions, become not only the most popular book of the author but also of all general Mennonite books published on this subject. An enlarged edition followed in 1904. The sixth edition appeared in 1937. In 1920 the Western District Conference published an English edition translated by Gustav A. Haury (Sketches from Church History for Mennonite Schools) which was followed by a second revised edition published by the Herald Book and Printing Company in 1932. In 1951 the seventh German edition in which the second part was completely revised and enlarged by Cornelius Krahn was published by the Herald Book and Printing Company, the publisher of the last editions.
The book was later mostly used by the German-speaking Mennonites of Canada and South America. It was divided into four customary parts (early, medieval, Reformation, and modern) depicting the highlights from church history with a special emphasis upon those events of interest to Mennonites. The last part of the book gave a brief summary of Mennonite history and activities in all countries up to the year of publication.
