Blaauw, a widely ramified Dutch family, of which at least several generations were Mennonites. By 1450 this family was living at Westzaan near Amsterdam. Most of the members of this Blaauw family in the 17th and 18th centuries were Mennonites and well-to-do lumber dealers; e.g., Dirck Dircks (Blaauwe Dirk) at Westzaan, who died in 1680. Claas Gerritsz Blaauw, who was married to Guurtje Michiels Bruynvis, was a member of the Mennonite church of Zaandam. His son Gerrit, b. 1727 at Westzaan, baptized in the Zonist congregation at Amsterdam, d. there 1798, was first textile merchant in Amsterdam; in 1759-1779 he lived at Ceylon as an agent of the Dutch East India Company. He was married to Cornelia Smidt, a daughter of Petrus Smidt, the well-known pastor of the Amsterdam Zonist congregation. Another descendant of this family, also called Gerrit Blaauw (1750-1825), was a member of the Amsterdam city council, then sheriff and burgomaster of Amsterdam, and also a Mennonite. His children did not belong to the Mennonite Church. Some Mennonite descendants of this family were still found at Amsterdam and other places. Cornelis Blaauw (Noordeinde van Graft, 1882-Amsterdam, 1957), an accountant at Amsterdam, was active as a deacon of the Amsterdam congregation, a trustee of the Algemene Doopsgezinde Sociëteit, and in many of its activities.

Besides Gerrit Blaauw, mention should be made of Hendrik J. Blaauw, preacher of the Old Flemish congregation at Norden 1775-1776, Heerenveen-Knijpe 1776-1782, and Middelie 1782-ca. 1803, and Adriaan Blaauw Kzn (ca. 1855-1883), pastor at Wolvega 1881-1882 and Wieringen 1882-d. 1883.
