Frieda Nettie Sprunger Boehr: missionary to China, was born 13 February 1890 in Berne, Indiana. Her parents were David C. Sprunger and Verena Sprunger Sprunger. She chose nursing as her career, and in 1914-1915 she joined the deaconessmovement. She went to China in 1921 to assist in the medical work of the General Conference Mennonite mission. Seeing the need for outpatient clinics, the mission released her from full-time hospital duties. She managed country clinics with the help of two Chinese workers and a Chinese lay evangelist. She married Peter J. Boehr, also a missionary in China, on 30 January 1937. Together they worked in medicine and evangelism. After World War II Peter and Frieda were the first General Conference Mennonite missionaries to return to China. They began a new work in western China, where their last years were productive ones. They lived through the hardships of a country in revolution, being the last General Conference Mennonite missionaries to leave China (1951). Following service in various locations in the United States, Frieda and Peter retired in Berne, Indiana. She died 15 January 1982.
