Boer family
Boer (De Boer), a Dutch Mennonite family, descending from Hans Baur (Bauer) and Anna Willener, Swiss Mennonites, who migrated in 1711 from Oberhofen, Swiss canton of Bern, to Sappemeer, Dutch province of Groningen. Here this family engaged in farming as they had in Switzerland. Their daughter Barbara married Peter Gerber, and their son Abraham married Trinette (Trijntje), daughter of the preacher Jacob Stähly. Abraham (1708-1799), the father of Abraham Hansen Boer (1772-1859), later called himself de Boer. Abraham Hansen was married to Eke Coolman, a member of the Groningen Mennonite Coolman family and was the great-grandfather of M. G. de Boer (b. 1867), professor of Dutch history at the university of Amsterdam and author of a large number of historical books and papers, including a paper on his family, entitled Vom Thunersee zum Sappemeer, published in Berner Zeitschrift für Geschichte und Heimatkunde, 1947-1 (also reprint).
