Broadway (Virginia, USA)
Broadway, Virginia is a town (1953 pop. 600; 2000 pop. 2200) in the northern part of Rockingham County. It is the general center of a Mennonite community comprising the Zion and Trissels congregations, the latter being the oldest active congregation within the Virginia Mennonite Conference. From this center mission extension activity has been carried on in the adjacent counties of Virginia and West Virginia since the late 19th century. A number of smaller congregations resulted as an outgrowth of this work. Mennonites of this community in the 1950s were engaged in farming, with specialization in poultry, dairying, and horticulture. They were pioneers in the system of contract feeding of broilers which largely affected the economic life of the northern counties of Virginia and the eastern counties of West Virginia.
