Brotherhood Mutual Insurance Company (Fort Wayne, Indiana, USA)
Brotherhood Mutual Insurance Company was organized in 1917 under the name, the Brotherhood Aid Association of the Defenseless Mennonite Conference. Nine directors chosen from the various churches of the conference formed the board of directors of the association which was formed to give protection in case of fire or storm losses to its members. Coverage was later extended to members of other church bodies. By 1935 the organization was changed to a legal mutual insurance company and formed independent of conference direction in order to comply with state and federal regulations. Until 1939 the central office was located at Grabill, Indiana; in that year it was moved to Fort Wayne, Indiana. Insurance in force in 1950 was over $66,000,000, extended principally to policy holders in the states of Indiana, Illinois, Michigan, and Ohio. In addition to fire and storm coverage, the company offered health, accident, and life insurance in 1950.
In 2007 Brotherhood Mutual specialized in insurance protection for churches and related ministries. It was one of the United States' top 50 property casualty insurers, measured by return on equity over the past six years. The company insured more than 30,000 churches and related ministries and was licensed to do business in 29 states and the District of Columbia. In 2007 it had assets of $293,000,000.
