Budget, The (Periodical)

The Budget has been published weekly in Sugarcreek, Tuscarawas County, Ohio, since its first issue, 15 May 1890. For over 30 years the paper was published and edited by Amish Mennonites and was widely circulated among them from coast to coast. The correspondence from their communities gives it considerable historical value. Two of the leading proprietors and editors were J. C. Miller and S. H. Miller, the latter an Amish Mennonite minister. Since 1920, the Budget has been out of Mennonite control, but it continues to carry much Old Order Amish local news and is widely read in their communities. The paper was known as The Weekly Budget up to the time the Royal Printing Company began publishing it in 1920.
