Bueckert, Herman J. (1911-2001)

Herman J. Bueckert: Mennonite minister and bishop; born 20 March 1911 to John and Sarah Bueckert in Schönwiese, Saskatchewan. He was one of several children in the family. He grew up in a farming community,  attended an Old Colony school near his home for several years, and learned English in night classes at another school about two miles from his home. When he was old enough to be a farm hand, he spent his summers working for farmers in larger some communities such as Hepburn and Dalmeny. On 13 June 1937, he married Helena Harms (1908-1984), daughter of Peter and Helena (Ginter) Harms.  They initially lived with her parents near Steele, Saskatchewan, and then on their own farm east of Neuanlage and later on a farm near Chortitz.  They had six children, all of whom survived childhood. Herman J. Bueckert was ordained as a minister in the Old Colony Mennonite Church at Hague-Osler, Saskatchewan on 24 August 1950.  The prospect of more land, prompted the family to move in 1961 to Prepatou, British Columbia, 60 miles north of Fort St. John.  Here he was ordained as a bishop for the Old Colony Mennonite Church on 8 July 1969, and continued to be in active service until her retired in 1990.

Herman Bueckert also worked as a machinist and a carpenter. His coffin-making skills were often in great demand. He was a versatile man, able to sew and cook for himself, as well as to carry out other daily tasks. His wife Helena died on 16 December 1984. Herman J. Bueckert  moved into the seniors’ home in Presatou after his retirement, and died 13 February 2001.
