Carel van Tiegem (Thiegem), an Anabaptist martyr, born at Kortrijk (Courtrai) in Flanders, and died at the stake there, 20 December 1550 (Martyrs Mirror incorrectly states 1559). He had formerly been a shoemaker, but at the time of his arrest he was a weaver. His goods were confiscated. During the execution a special guard was set up, because the magistrates feared a popular uprising.
