The Howard (Rhode Island) Civilian Public Service Unit No. 85, attached to the Rhode Island State Hospital for Mental Diseases, under Mennonite Central Committee direction, was established in February 1943 and closed in October 1946. Directors were in order Earl Heisey, Warren Leatherman, Willard Hunsberger, and Ernest Goertz. A special feature of this unit was the Relief Training unit January 1944-February 1945.
