Cleyndert family

Cleyndert, was a Mennonite family found in the Dutch Zaan district north of Amsterdam. Most of them originally belonged to the Groningen Old Flemish congregation of Oostzaandam. They usually were grain merchants, and some of them were deacons in the church. A descendant of this family, Claes Cleyndert (1799-1842), and his son Hendrik Cleyndert (1825-1887), both grain merchants, promoted the building of a church (1843) at Nieuwendam, near Amsterdam, where at this time some members of the Cleyndert family resided. The Nieuwendam meetinghouse, a frame building, was a gift of the Cleyndert family.
