Creek Bank Meetinghouse

The Creek Bank Old Order Mennonite Meetinghouse is located in Wellington County, Mapleton Township, on Lot 19, Concession 9, about 12 km north of Elmira, Ontario. The meetinghouse is named after the small hamlet about 3 km north of the meetinghouse.

The Creekbank meetinghouse was built in 2000 on land purchased from James Gingerich. The North Woolwich meetinghouse near Floradale was becoming overcrowded. Splitting the district and holding services every Sunday was not an option because the North Woolwich church is shared with a Markham Mennonite group. After several meetings, the congregation decided to build a new meetinghouse, with 30 families from the North Woolwich congregation and 10 families from the Olivet congregation making up the new Creekbank Church district. The Creekbank and North Woolwich meetinghouses are closer together than most Old Order Mennonite churches, owing largely to the higher concentration of Old Order Mennonites in this area.

In 2001 Maynard Martin was ordained as the Creekbank congregation's first minister, and Paul B. Weber was ordained as the first deacon. As is the practice in Old Order churches, they were ordained by lot from within the congregation.  Ordained persons are not paid for their church service.

In 2004 the number of families in the Creekbank district was approximately 43.  In addition, 2 widows, 1 widower, and 18 single adults were part of the congregation. An accurate count of "members" is not always available because Old Order Mennonites think of themselves as members of the church at large and not just the immediate congregation.  The congregation has held regular signing for the deaf ever since the church was built.
