Dirck Jansz, an Anabaptist martyr of Bocholt, was sentenced to be burned at the stake at Leiden, Holland, on 24 November 1552, together with Heynric Dircsz and Adriaen Cornelisz. These brethren, who steadfastly suffered martyrdom, are celebrated in a song found in the Liedtboecxken van den Offer des Heeren: "Ick magh wel droeflijek singen, in desen tijt van noot" (I must sing sadly in this time of distress). According to Karel Vos, Leidsch Jaarboekje 1918, 36 ff., Dirck Jansz is the author of a song that he composed while in prison, beginning "Waket doch op met grooten vlijt" (Awake with zeal). It is found in the hymnbook Een nieu Liedenboeck of 1562 and the following editions.
