He was educated at the university of Amsterdam and the Amsterdam Mennonite Theological Seminary and served two congregations: Holwerd-Blija, 1897-1898; and Deventer, 1898-1939. He was a very serious and modest man, with a warm heart for his congregations. From 1934 to 1939 he was president of the Algemene Doopsgezinde Sociëteit (General Conference of the Dutch Mennonites).
