Richard Ehrenberg (1857-1921), national economist, and professor of political sciences at the University of Rostock, made a valuable study of the commercial history of [[Hamburg-Altona Mennonite Church (Freie und Hansestadt Hamburg, Germany)|Hamburg-Altona]]. In it he gives the first extensive account of the development of the Mennonite settlement there. J. G. Busch (1728-1800), also an economist, had previously stressed the cultural importance of the Dutch Mennonites in Hamburg-Altona, especially pointing out their contributions to shipping <em>(Versuch einer Geschichte der Hamburgischen Handlung, </em>1797). Ehrenberg and other research scholars inspired by him continued this study. The economic development of prominent Mennonite families in Altona, and their immediate influence on the unusually early attainment of liberty of economic pursuits, is put into the framework of German economic history. The result of his investigations is summarized under the title, <em>Altona unter Schauenburgischer Herrschaft </em>(Altona, 1891-93), published and most of it written by Ehrenberg with the support of the Royal <em>Kommerzkollegium, </em>of which he was secretary 1888-1897. Especially No. 4, <em>Gewerbefreiheit und Zunftzwang in Ottensen und Altona, 1543-1640, </em>is of interest in this connection, in which "Anfänge einer Grossindustrie" (founded by Mennonites) gives much information. In No. VI, pp. 90-97, P. Piper discusses "Die Reformierten und die Mennoniten Altonas," based on B. C. Roosen's <em>Geschichte der Mennonitengemeinde zu Hamburg und Altona </em>(1886). Other pertinent works by Ehrenberg are "Hamburgs Handel und Schifffahrt vor 200 Jahren" (1892), in <em>Hamburg</em><em> vor 200 Jahren, </em>and <em>Altonas topographische Entwicklung </em>(Altona, 1894). A complete survey of Ehrenberg's works is contained in the <em>Archiv für exakte Wirtschaftsforschung </em>(Thünenarchiv) (which he founded and published until his death), Vol. IV, No. 4, pp. 462 ff.
