Friedrich II, Duke of Holstein-Gottorp (1568-1587)
Friedrich II (Frederick), Duke of Holstein-Gottorp, 1586-1587, son of Duke Adolf of Holstein-Gottorp (1526-1586) and grandson of King Frederik I of Denmark. He was born 21 April 1568.
The region of Eiderstedt (principal town Tönning), where many Dutch had settled and become prosperous, belonged to his realm. Among these were many Mennonites and Davidjorists. On 21 February 1587, Friedrich issued an order that the Dutch immigrants must present a statement of their religious views before being admitted, and that the clergy from the pulpits warn the people to "beware of false prophets," and enjoin upon them not to sell land to suspicious persons.
Friedrich died 15 June 1587 and was succeeded as duke first by his younger brother Philipp (1570-1590) and later by younger brothers Johann Adolf (1575-1616) and Johann Friedrich (1579-1634).
