Geertruydt Adriaens de Roevre (d. 1539)

Geertruydt Adriaens de Roevre (Geertken Erasmusdochter of Tricht), wife of Wouter Hoogendoren, a Dutch Anabaptist martyr, was sentenced to death and burned at the stake at Vught, province of North Brabant, on 11 September 1539, with three other martyrs. The day before, four martyrs had been burned, among whom was Paulus van Drunen, the bishop of their congregation. Van Braght includes a report on the martyrs of Vught in which he places their martyrdom wrongly in the year 1538; he also says that 12 Anabaptists were executed, whereas the records name only eight. Some of the names given in the records are found in the Martyrs' Mirror but other names are not handed down by van Braght. The name of Geertruydt, mentioned in the official records, is not found in the Martyrs' Mirror. It is rather surprising that she is found in the Reformed martyrbook by Adriaen van Haemstede, De Geschiedenisse ende den doodt der vromen Martelaren, of 1559. Haemstede no doubt considered her as Reformed, which is an error. She was an Anabaptist, as the records clearly show.
