Gerig, Joseph K. (1868-1944)

Joseph K. Gerig, elder in the Evangelical Mennonite Church (later Fellowship of Evangelical Churches), was born on 28 October 1868 at Grabill, Indiana, the fourth of the ten children of Joseph and Katie Nofziger Gerig. He was married to Leah B. Gerig on 5 December 1889; one daughter was born to them. He began his ministry in 1898 as assistant pastor of the Defenseless Mennonite congregation of Woodburn, Indiana. In 1908 he took charge of the Salem Gospel Mission in Chicago, serving actively and effectively for 21 years. He was ordained as elder on 2 October 1917. He was also appointed church evangelist for 18 months and superintendent for the Indiana, Ohio, and Michigan district. For one and one half years he was pastor of the congregation in Pioneer, Ohio. His outstanding spiritual ministry ended in his death on 7 April 1944. He was buried at Woodburn.
