Ernest Ralph Goossen: lawyer; born 23 August 1924 in Steinbach, Manitoba, to Johann D. Goossen and Elisabeth R. (Friesen) Goossen. He was the fourth of five children. Ernest married Marjorie O. Handley (b. 1926) on 16 July 1949 in Manitoba. The couple had one son.

Ernest Goossen grew up in southern Manitoba. His parents enjoyed travelling and took the family to the west and east coasts of North America, as well as to England. Ernest served in the Canadian Navy during the Second World War, with active service in the North Atlantic and in the Caribbean.

Ernest, or “Ernie” as he was popularly known, began practicing law in Steinbach in 1949 at the age of 25, following his family’s tradition of public service. His father and grandfather had both served as notaries public in addition to their regular work in land conveyance. Ernie Goossen was Steinbach’s first home-grown lawyer, serving his community until his death of a heart attack in Steinbach in 1985.
