Douwe Simons Gorter, the son of Simon Gorter and Tiete van der Zee, was born at Hindelopen on 3 August 1811. In 1834 he was called as Mennonite minister to Stavoren and Warns, in 1854 to Balk, the first trained minister of that congregation, and died there on 27 August 1876. He was married to Tryntjen Koopmans. He was the author of the following books: Onderzoek naar het kenmerkend beginsel der Doopsgezinden (1850); Brief aan J. Visscher over de waardeering van den kinderdoop (1851); De Christelyke Doop (1854); Vruchten van onderzoek en strijd (1874). He was one of the most erudite preachers of his time. He was also the editor of the Doopsgezinde Lectuur (1854, 1856, and 1858), to which he contributed many articles, including a study on the martyr Hans van Overdam.
