Gospel Tidings (Radio Program)
Gospel Tidings was a Sunday morning radio program that first aired on 20 October 1940 on CFQC radio (5,000 watts), Saskatoon, Saskatchewan and broadcast at 600 Kilocycles. It was the first radio program of the Mennonite Brethren Church in Canada. For its first seven years it broadcast as Morning Devotion, but then changed its name to Gospel Tidings. Initially a 15 minute program, it soon expanded to 30 minutes. From May to the end of August the program was produced by the Western Children’s Mission. The program featured devotionals by local Mennonite Brethren preachers, choral music, poetry, and selected readings.
The Saskatoon City Mission of the Saskatchewan Mennonite Brethren conference was the first sponsor and later the three Saskatoon MB congregations sponsored the program. The first programme director was Abe Ediger and the music director was Abe B. Janzen who was followed in 1954 by Wilmer Neufeld. Later CFQC shifted the broadcast time to a less suitable hour, and in the fall of 1976 the program was discontinued. It was replaced by Words of the Gospel, a Mennonite Brethren program originating in California. One vinyl sound recording: Male Voices of Gospel Tidings (T-53985) was released. In 1963 a collection of several radio sermons was published by Western Tract Mission under the title Gospel Tidings.
