View source for Grebel, Jakob (1460-1526)

Jakob Grebel (1460-1526), outstanding representative of an old patrician family of [[Zürich (Switzerland)|Zürich]], father of [[Grebel, Conrad (ca. 1498-1526)|Conrad Grebel]], the founder of Swiss [[Anabaptism|Anabaptism]]. He was a prominent member of the Zürich city council, and a frequent ambassador for Zürich at the Swiss Confederation meetings. While he did not agree with his son, he also did not agree with Zwingli's harsh measures toward the Anabaptists and largely because of his opposition to Zwingli was executed at Zürich on 30 October 1526 on the charge of having received illegal stipends from foreign rulers in 1520-1522.
