Grietje (Griete) Maes, an Anabaptist martyr, widow of Gerrit, was executed by drowning at Amsterdam on 15 May 1535, together with six other Anabaptist women because "they have been rebaptized, holding pernicious views concerning the sacraments . . . contrary to the laws and decrees of his imperial Majesty . . . without having shown penitence." Their property was confiscated. Van Braght seems to make two martyrs of this person, calling one Grietje Maes and the other Gerrit's widow.
