Erhard Hegenwalt, once a teacher in the Pfaffers Monastery, Canton of St. Gall, Switzerland, a friend of Conrad Grebel, a student in Wittenberg in 1524-1526, wrote a letter to Conrad Grebel from Wittenberg dated 1 January 1525, now preserved in the Stadtbibliothek St. Gallen (Vadiana) ms. 31,222. The letter is part of a lost correspondence which included at least two letters from Grebel and two from Hegenwalt. Grebel may have met Hegenwalt in January 1523 at the disputation held in Zürich at that time when the latter attended and edited the minutes, which were published soon after. Hegenwalt's letter reports that Luther had received the letter written to him by Grebel and was sending greetings to Grebel from Luther who wanted the group in Zürich to know that he was not "illdisposed" toward them. The Hegenwalt letter is of considerable value because it reports on 13 points mentioned in the Grebel letter to Hegenwalt which Hegenwalt in turn tries to refute. It is possible that the Erhard Hegenwaldt who secured the M.D. degree in Wittenberg, and also a city physician in Frankfurt am Main, Germany by the same name in 1540, were the same as the letter writer.
