Gerardus van (den) Hemert, born 1698 at Middelburg in the Netherlands, died there 1759, was a Reformed minister of Hellevoetsluis 1720-1721, Voorschoten 1721-1722, and Middelburg 1722-1759. He refused a call as professor of theology at the Utrecht University in 1737. Van Hemert was a violent antagonist of the Mennonites. He attacked Gerardus de Wind, the Mennonite preacher of Middelburg, in his booklet, G. de Wind . , . uit zyne Verhandeling van Godts Algemeene Genade ontmaskert, . . . (Middelburg, 1730). After G. Maatschoen had translated Schijn's history of the Mennonites from the Latin into the Dutch language, van Hemert published: Brief . . . aan den Here G. Maatschoen Betreffende voornamelijk den oorsprang en betrekking der Mennoniten of Doopsgezinden in opzigt tot de Munstersche en andere oproerige Doopsgezinden . . . (Middelburg, 1744).
