Hendrik Slachtscaep (Heinrich, Henric von Tongeren), one of the "Wassenberg preachers," born ca. 1470 at Tongeren, bishopric of Liége, a former Catholic priest, came more and more to Protestant convictions, which he preached in popular style with great force and success. Of especial interest are his tracts, Der Trostbrief, and the epistle Aen myne liefte broeders en susters tot Sustern. He was a determined opponent of infant baptism. In 1531 he preached in Wassenberg, Coesfeld, Aachen, and Maastricht. Against him and Campanus was issued the edict of the government of Düsseldorf of 1 November 1532. Invited by Bernhard Rothmann by letter, he betook himself to Münster (1534) and was baptized there. Then he was sent out with the other "Wassenberg preachers" as apostles; he was executed as a martyr at Soest on 23 October 1534.
