Hendrik van Echtelo (Eckelo, Eeclo (Eecloo), also called Heyndrik de Schoenmaker), an Anabaptist martyr, was a young man who, according to van Braght, Martyrs' Mirror, was beheaded in 1572 at Ghent, Belgium, on the Vrijdag marketplace. Verheyden, studying the sources, found a heretic, not especially denounced as an Anabaptist, called Hendrick van Eecloo, who was a weaver and who was hanged on 29 May 1572 outside the Muyden Gate at Ghent. Verheyden is doubtful whether these two accounts can refer to the same person and states that the problem of Hendrik van Eckelo (van Eecloo) cannot be clarified. Van Braght reports that Hendrik is the author of a song beginning "Aenghesien de nature mij dit te mercken doet" (Because nature makes me know this). This song is found in Sommighe Stichtelyke Liedekens bij diverse personen gemaeckt (Hoorn, 1632): 64.
