Herman Buens (d. 1563)
Herman Buens (Bienes), in van Braght's Martyrs' Mirror called simply Herman, was an Anabaptist martyr, burned at the stake at Rijssel (Lille), France, on 27 April 1563. According to Bibliographie he was a native of Borchloon and a son of Hendrik Aerts. By the zeal of the ardent inquisitor Titelman, after a Catholic priest, N. van Casteele, had denounced them, 12 Anabaptists at Halewijn in Flanders had been arrested and put in prison at Rijssel. Then some brethren and sisters had come to Rijssel and "called to the prisoners over the fortification, for their consolation. "One of those visitors was Herman, whose father likely was among the prisoners. Having been seen by a policeman, Herman was arrested, and "holding immovably to the mercy of God" suffered martyrdom.
