Hans Jakob Hess, a Swiss Mennonite preacher in the canton of Bern, Switzerland, was imprisoned three times for his faith in 1637-1639, but escaped twice. Finally he was put in chains for 16 weeks; he endured this martyrdom until his death. His property was sold, but none of the 4,000 fl. of proceeds was given his heirs. His wife was also imprisoned in the same year (1639) and died after 63 weeks in prison.
