John K. Hiebert: minister of the Mennonite Brethren (MB) Church; born at Einlage, Chortitza Mennonite Settlement, South Russia, 8 September 1865, the third child of Cornelius and Katharina (Wiens) Hiebert (and older brother of Peter C. Hiebert). In 1876 the family immigrated to America and settled on a farm southeast of Hillsboro, Kansas. Here John grew up and received his education in the Gnadenau school. Through extensive reading he later broadened his education. After his conversion he joined the Ebenfeld MB Church through baptism 16 April 1880 and became an active member. On 15 December 1891, he married Sarah Eitzen and established a farm home in the same locality. To them six children were born, of which one died in infancy. The surviving four sons entered the medical profession: Joelle, Abraham, John, and Homer.

Hiebert was deeply interested in Christian work and very active in church life. In 1904 the church elected him to the ministry and three years later ordained him. In December 1915 the pastoral leadership was entrusted to him, a position he held until shortly before his death.

The MB Church found in him a strong advocate of educational advance. He took a prominent part in the founding of Tabor College and became the first chairman of the board of directors of the school, serving 20 years on the board. Hiebert was also a supporter of the Bethesda Hospital, Goessel, Kansas, and served on its board of directors for some time. In the MB Conference he was an active worker, making his most noted contribution in connection with the Publication Committee, on which he served as secretary for 30 years. He died at Hillsboro 9 January 1933 and was buried at the Ebenfeld MB Cemetery.
