Hofer, David M. (1869-1944)

David M. Hofer, Krimmer Mennonite Brethren evangelist, editor, city missionary and relief worker, was born 24 July 1869 in Johannesruh, Russia and died 31 December 1944 in Chicago. In 1879 he immigrated to the United States with his parents, Michael and Mary Gross Hofer, and settled on a farm near Bridgewater, South Dakota. In 1893 he married Barbara Hofer. In 1902-1914 he was engaged in the grain and baking business; 1914 he left the business field and answered the call into the ministry. With Joseph W. Tschetter as associate he founded the Lincoln Avenue Gospel Mission in Chicago in 1915. He edited the Wahrheitsfreund, the organ of the Krimmer Mennonite Brethren Conference 1917-1933. In 1922-1923 he served as American relief administrator in Russia. He was the author of Die Hungersnot in Russland und unsere Reise um die Welt (Chicago, 1924).
