Jakob Hofer was a Hutterian Brethren preacher chosen in Russia in 1859. He died in the Milltown Bruderhof in South Dakota in 1900 at the age of 70. He served as preacher for 41 years.

Another record states that he was born on 10 June 1830 and died on 15 April 1901. He is considered the co-founder of the Schmiedeleut in North America.
