Hoogezand (Groningen, Netherlands)

Hoogezand, a town in the Dutch province of Groningen, which, together with the adjoining town of Sappemeer, is the seat of a Mennonite congregation. (See Hoogezand-Sappemeer for the history of the congregation.) In the town of Hoogezand and vicinity Mennonite farmers settled early in the 17th century. In 1711 a number of Swiss Mennonite immigrant families settled at Hoogezand, at nearby Kalkwijk, and about 1721 nine Mennonite families moved from Deventer to Hoogezand.
