Dirk (Thierry) van Hoogstraten (1596-1640): a Dutch Golden Age painter; born 1596 in Antwerp, Belgium, the son of Jan "Hans" van Hoogstraten (21 September 1568, Antwerp - 14 March 1605, The Hague) and Janneken Wale (d. 10 October 1622, The Hague). Dirk was a grandson of François Diericksz van Hoogstraten (26 September 1541, Antwerp, Belgium - 19 February 1632, Dordrecht, Netherlands), who emigrated from Antwerp, Belgium, on account of his Mennonitism and settled in Dordrecht, Dutch province of South Holland. Dirk's wife was Mayken de Koning (9 September 1598, Dordrecht - 7 January 1645, Dordrecht), daughter of Isaac Hendrikszn. de Coning and Lijntgen Simonsdr. Dirk and Mayken had eight children: Samuel, Dina, Jan, François, Cornelia, Susanna, Willemina, and Francina. Dirk died on 20 December 1640 in Dordrecht, Netherlands.
Dirk was one of the few painters who joined the Anabaptists. He was at first a silversmith, but after a journey through Germany he felt drawn to painting and engraving. Of his works only a few have been preserved. One of his pictures, "Mary and her Mother and the Christ child," is in the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam.
Several of Dirk's children were well-known artists, including Samuel Dirksz van Hoogstraten (1627-1678), a Dutch Golden Age painter and poet, and Jan van Hoogstraten (1628-1654), also a Dutch Golden Age painter. Jan traveled to Vienna in 1652 to work at court and died there in 1654. He was buried in St. Stephen's Cathedral. Son François van Hoogstraten (1632-1696) was a painter, poet, bookseller, printer, and publisher.
