Van Hulst was a Dutch Mennonite family, probably from the Lower Rhine district in Germany, in the last part of the 17th century residing at Nijmegen, Dutch province of Gelderland, where Laurens (Lourens) van Hulst was appointed deacon in 1697. His son Caspar van Hulst and grandson Jan van Hulst (died 1809) were also deacons. A son of this Jan van Hulst, also named Jan (died 13 November 1821 at Kleve), became a Mennonite minister. After having been trained at the Amsterdam Mennonite Seminary, he served the congregation of Kleve 1804-1821.

His cousin Jan van Hulst, born 24 August 1779 at Nijmegen, died 12 November 1846 at Norden, a son of Lourens, studied at the Amsterdam Seminary and served the congregation of Kampen 1802-1809 and Norden 1809-1844; in 1844 he resigned. He published Korte Geloofsbelijdenis in vragen en antwoorden ten behoeve van Min-geoefenden in den Godsdienst (Norden, 1816), also some German and English theological works in Dutch translations. Two of his sons went into the ministry: Laurens van Hulst, serving the congregation of Emden 1826-1850, in which year he resigned to become director of the Teyler Foundation at Haarlem, and Willem van Hulst (died 1885), serving at Bolsward 1831-1858.

Whether Coenraad van Hulst, baptized at Amsterdam in 1793 (Lamist congregation), died 1844, who was a famous actor, was a member of this family or not, could not be ascertained.
