Jan Joosten van Goedereede (d. 1534)
Jan Joosten van Goedereede (Jan Jooste) of Goeree, Dutch province of South Holland, an Anabaptist martyr, who was beheaded at The Hague 10 February 1534. He had previously been a Catholic priest in the Dutch province of Zeeland, joined the Anabaptists, being baptized by Gerrit Boeckbinder in 1531 and lived in Amsterdam three years. Here he married and was ordained a preacher by Jacob van Campen. With eight fellow believers he was arrested. At this cross-examination he admitted that Gerrit Boeckbinder had baptized him; he then was sent with Jan Matthys from Haarlem and Jacob van Campen to Wormer and Westzaan, where he preached and baptized seven or eight persons. When he was asked whether the Anabaptists kept a list of baptized persons, he replied that he knew nothing of it; their promises were Yea and Nay; they called themselves Bondgenoten, the name of the adherents of Melchior Hoffman.
