Jarich Jelles, a native of Friesland, apparently from Harlingen, was a member of the Amsterdam Lamist Mennonite congregation. He was unmarried and the well-to-do owner of a grocery store in Amsterdam. About 1650 he retired from business to devote himself to "acknowledging the truth which is after godliness" (Titus 1:1).
