Gerrit Karsdorp was a minister belonging to an old Mennonite family of Leiden, several branches of which lived in North Germany. He was a minister at Friedrichstadt a.d. Eider and then at Hamburg, serving the church there 1718-1750. He was the first salaried minister of the Hamburg Mennonite Church, receiving 1200 marks annually. He was zealous in promoting the instruction of the children, and had 60 Dutch question-and-answer books sent from Holland for this purpose. He died on 19 September 1750. His colleague Gerrit Beets delivered his funeral sermon, De vrolyke gesettheyd eenes Christen tegens et verschrikkingen des doods . . . Hamburg, n.d.
