Hildebrand Cornelis Klinkert was born 11 June 1829 at Amsterdam, and died 20 November 1913 at Leiden. He was at first a surveyor; he was educated for the missions by Dirk Harting, pastor at Enkhuizen, and the Mission School of Rotterdam; in 1857 he entered the service of the Dutch Mission Association. He worked at first with Pieter Jansz at Japara, but in 1861 transferred to Semarang, his principal task being to translate the New Testament into the Malay language. In 1862 he settled on the island of Chianjur (Tjiandjur) as a missionary. In 1863 he entered the service of the Dutch Bible Society and later became an instructor of the Malay language at the University of Leiden.
