New page

Kraen (Craen, Kranen), a Mennonite family living in Antwerp, Belgium; from this town Peter Kraen (Kranen), a button maker, had a narrow escape in 1571. His wife was for a while in prison at Antwerp. Peter Kraen moved to Cologne, Germany, where his daughter Sara, b. 1566 at Antwerp, in 1585 married Joost van den Vondel, a hatmaker, also of Antwerp, who had also fled from there to Cologne because of his Mennonite conviction. This Joost van den Vondel and Sara Kranen (Kraen) were the parents of the famous Dutch poet Joost van den Vondel (b. 1587). In 1596 the van den Vondel family moved to Amsterdam. Sara Kranen died here in 1638; she belonged to the Flemish congregation of Amsterdam.

Whether the West-Prussian Mennonite Krahn family(Kraan, Kran) is related to the Antwerp Kraen family could not be ascertained. It is not very likely that Huyge Jacob Kraen, who died as an Anabaptist martyr in 1534 at The Hague, belonged to this family.
