La Montaña Colony (Paraguay)

La Montaña Colony, Paraguay, is a small Mennonite settlement 140 km. (87 mi.) northeast of Encarnación in southern Paraguay. Its name means "The Mountain." It was founded in 1980 by settlers from Agua Azul who left partly because of differences within the colony and partly to find new mission opportunities. One thousand hectares (2,470 acres) of land have been purchased. The congregation is called Faith Mennonite Church and is affiliated with the Eastern Pennsylvania Mennonite Church. In 1986 the congregation consisted of 44 members in 17 families of whom 6 were Americans, 10 Paraguayans and one Paraguayan-American. Stephen M. Stoltzfus was pastor of the congregation and leader of the settlement.
