1990 Article

The Latin America District Conference began in 1937 as a mission effort of the Southern District Conference (Mennonite Brethren). Harry and Sarah Neufeld were the first missionaries to work with the Hispanic Americans living in a valley at the southern tip of Texas, separated from Mexico by the Rio Grande River. Other workers during the early years included Henry and Anna Esau, Henry and Ruth Thomas, Ruben and Eva Wedel, Daniel and Elsie Wirsche, Alvin and Ruth Neufeld, Ruth Loewen, and A. W. Epp.

A Christian day school built in El Faro, Texas in 1948 reached a peak of 120 students in 12 grades. It was closed after 21 years of service.

In the early 1960s the mission was organized as the Latin American Mennonite Brethren District Conference (LAMB) with seven churches in the United States (Casita-Garciasville, La Grulla, La Joya, Mission, Lull, Donna, and Pharr) and three churches in Mexico (Reynosa, Diaz Ordaz, and Magneyes). The LAMB conference, consisting of 300 members in 1984, conducts work in youth activities, missions, Christian education, general welfare and Mennonite Disaster Service, and administration. Among the leaders of the conference in 1987 were Alfredo Tagle, Ricardo Pena, Inocencia Garcia, and Roland Mireles.
